Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 02/06/16

June 2nd, cold, cutting north-easterly wind, at times drizzly, what a start to summer. Nine holes were more than enough today.

A really good start to what wasn't a bad nine holes, considering the strong wind. A long straight drive off the first tee to 190 yards, followed by a 154 yard 5-wood. The next hybrid shot was one club short, needing a 7-iron chip-and-run onto the green, and two putts for a nett par 6. The 2nd was also good, my drive again being down the middle, and the subsequent 5-wood putting me on the green. Two putts again but this time for a nett birdie 4.

Holes 1, 2 and 9 - 02 June 2016

I used the driver on the 3rd as it was into the wind, although I didn't give it a full-blooded swing. The ball landed to the right of the green from where I could have easily parred the hole, but after chipping on I took three putts for a nett bogey 4.

The 4th started well but my second shot landed on the bank to the right of the fairway. I'm always worried when playing of this bank that I will pull the ball left into the lake. In the event my attempts to avoid doing this led to a shank that went right into the nearby pine tree, but fortunately fell out in a playable position. A good hybrid shot put me just short of the green, a chip and two putts giving me a nett bogey 7.

The 5th effectively messed up the round. I pulled my driver shot into trees on the left. Fortunately it ended up through the trees in a playable lie with no impediments between me and the green. I then looked up as I played the 9-iron shot, which went nowhere. The next 9-iron wasn't much better, despite ensuring that I didn't look up, then a gap wedge landed short of the green. The 7-iron chip-and-run was good and one putt gave be a nett double-bogey 6.

The 6th could have been a par if I had single putted what was a gettable putt. A good drive and a couple of irons had put me in a good position, but in the event I got a nett par 5.

After a reasonable drive and 5-wood on the 7th I chose the wrong club leaving me short of the green and close to the right-hand bunker. My chip was long resulting in a three putt finish for a nett bogey 7. My drive on the 8th drifted a bit right (the only drive to miss the fairway today!) where the ball was sitting up nicely in short rough. This enabled me to catch it clean with my 5-wood resulting in a 176 yard shot. From there I put a hybrid shot on the green and was only just short for a par putt. A par on this hole is rare as at 441 yards it's a long par 4. But a nett birdie 5 was acceptable.

I kept the drive short on the 9th conscious of the lake that grabs a lot of balls. Two 5-woods then got me to within range of the green but my iron shot was short, having dug in a bit on the soft ground where the ball had settled. It's a quagmire in winter and is still quite soft. I chipped on and two putted for a nett bogey 7.

So 52 shots and 19 putts, for 14 points. Let down really by poor play on the two par 3s, and a couple of poor club choices. But all in all not bad on a miserable day weather wise.

Game Golf scorecard.
