Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 03/11/16

A cold day with a chilling wind but at least it was dry and although the club had imposed winter rules, the course was in fact not that wintery. However, the piles of leaves were still around waiting for a stray ball but other than that there weren't many problems.

I hit the ground before the ball on the 1st, so although the shot was straight it only made just over 100 yards. The second and third were better, leaving me a 100 yard 8-iron shot to the green. I pulled it left and ended up in the bunker. My clearance only just made it, leaving an awkward chip from the very edge of the bunker wall, but it was good enough for a single putt. A nett bogey 7.

On the 2nd three out of four of us ended up in the ditch to the right. At least it is now dry and all the balls were found. My penalty drop rolled almost all the way back to the ditch but a well struck 8-iron got me to the middle of the fairway. My 9-iron was then short and just avoided the right bunker but the following 9-iron chip almost went in, leaving me a gimme for a nett bogey 6.

I again hit the ground before the ball on the 3rd and again only made about 100 yards, ending up with low hanging branches between me and the green. An attempted low 7-iron almost came off, just clipping the last branch, which left the shot short of the green. My 7-iron chip was also short because I caught ground again, leaving me a long putt that fortunately left me with a gettable putt for a net bogey 5.

My tee shot went right on the 4th ending up at the bottom of a bank from where I took a 7-iron that didn't go as far as it should have done but put me back on the fairway. The lake was now in play but I managed to avoid it leaving myself about 80 yards from the green. I then shanked my 8-iron up onto the bank to the right, from where I played the gap wedge onto the green, but was still along way from the pin. Fortunately I got down in two for a nett bogey 7.

Another poorly hit tee shot put me in the right bunker on the 5th. I got out with the 9-iron and then chipped with the 8-iron leaving me an easy putt for a nett par 4.

At last a clean tee shot on the 6th but the second, while being perfect distance, ended up way left of the green. I pitched a 9iron shot over the bunker and two-putted for a nett par 5.

The 7th was my best hole today. A reasonable hybrid tee shot was followed by a lovely hybrid that made over 150 yards. A 9‑iron pitch to the green and a putt that stopped literally on the edge of the cup, robbing me of a par but giving me a nett birdie 5.

The 8th was today's disaster. The tee shot was good but I then pushed the second into the lake. A penalty drop left me with a less than perfect lie so I took an 8-iron that went further than I expected, crossing the fairway and ending up right against the base of a tree trunk. All I could do was try a backhand flip with the 7-iron, the first attempt going nowhere and the second only getting me out into the rough. Now on 5, I took a 9-iron that finished just off the left of the green, from where I putted on and then two-putted for 10. How to ruin a reasonable round!

My 9th tee shot wasn't that long but I made up ground with the second. Then trying to hit a hybrid shot between the bank to the right and the trees to the left I sliced and ended up at the base of the said bank. An attempted 9-iron loft over the trees was thinned and instead went through the trees, managing to miss them, and miraculously ended up only about 15 yards from the green. Luck or what? I chipped up with the 7-iron but the pin was at the back of the green and I was well short. Two putts gave me a nett bogey 7, which I was more than pleased with in the circumstances.

The outcome, 56 shots and 15 putts, with 12 points. Hardly inspiring.
