Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 06/06/16

Well, summer seems to have arrived. After last Thursday's very cold game today the sun shone, it was very warm and there was hardly any wind. Perfect conditions in fact.

My friend Bob put his drive in the right hand trees on the 1st, and I then did exactly the same. But by a stroke of good luck mine hit a tree and bounced back out onto the fairway. A couple of decent 5-woods got me within range of the green and then a second stroke of luck steered a badly hit 8-iron along the ground and onto the green. Two putts and a nett par 6.

My drive on the 2nd kept left and out of trouble. A 5-wood, intentionally aimed left, then did its characteristic curve onto the green, running off to the right. A nice 7-iron chip-and-run gave me a relatively easy putt for a nett birdie 4.

I took the driver on the par3, 3rd. A bit risky as the out-of-bounds is just behind the green, but I got away with it. Another decent 7-iron chip and run, and a single putt gave me a nett birdie 3. Eight points in three holes is somewhat exceptional for me.

On the 4th I had a good drive but the following 5-wood went into the rough on the right. The lake on the left often results in me going too far right! My next hybrid shot was short of the green and landed in heavy rough. The 7-iron chip was overplayed taking me off the back of the green, from where I putted on and then two-putted for a nett bogey 7.

I took my driver again on the par 3, 5th but this time I did go too far. I took a 9-iron out of the rough, overshooting the hole. A good putt back gave me a knock-in for a nett par 4.

After a reasonable drive on the 6th I over-played a 5-wood, putting me behind trees close to the path leading to the 3rd tee. I had sight of the pin through a narrow gap in the trees (they were too high to pitch over) and I aimed for this using my 20 degree hybrid to keep the shot low. Unfortunately while the direction was good, the very long grass stopped the ball short. I then played a 7-iron through the gap, which went a fair way past the pin, but a well-measured long putt back went in for a nett par 5. A bit more luck!

On the 7th a reasonable drive and 5-wood set me up for a hybrid shot to the green, but it was long. A 9-iron chip back was short requiring two putts for a nett par 6.

Up to now although I had had a few wayward shots I had come through relatively unscathed, but on the 8th I wasn't so lucky. The drive had landed close to the left-hand trees and my 5-wood shot hit the outreaching branches of one of them. Unfortunately, it deflected into the trees. A muffed shot out only just got me back in play and then my next 5-wood also clipped a tree, but this time went through leaving me set up to go for the green. The 8-iron went off the green to the right, from where I putted on and then single-putted in for a nett bogey 7.

And so to the 9th. The drive was safe, landing short of the bunker on the left and far from the dreaded lake on the right. The next 5-wood went right into light rough. I decided not to take another 5-wood, instead using the 23 degree hybrid, the intention being not to run through into the trees on the left. You've guessed, with the shorter club the ball still ran through, leaving me in a poor lie by a tree. I took an 8-iron out and then over-chipped a 7 off the back of the green. I putted back on and put the ball down with the next putt for another nett bogey 7.

Game play - 06 June 2016

With a total of 49 shots and 17 points I certainly wasn't displeased with the round. Just a little bit more control and I could have got a 46 or 47 today.
