Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 09/06/16

There are usually two groups of us who play on Thursdays, one men and the other women. My usual playing partners were away today so I played with the women. After a slightly chilly start the sun broke through and it was a very warm day with little wind. Also, quite unusually, we were on our own for nearly the whole round, with the nearest group a couple of holes in front and no sign of anybody behind. This made for a very calm and tranquil day, only punctuated by bird calls, including a very persistent cuckoo.

On the 1st a drive and two 5-woods, each of around 145 yards, got me to pitching distance of the green, which I reached, only to spoil things with three putts for a nett bogey 7. My drive on the second strayed too close to the sloping bank on the right and the ball rolled into the water-filled ditch. I took a drop but didn't hit the next shot very well, leaving me a lot to do to pitch on. In fact I needed two shots to get to the green and two-putted for another 7, but this time a blob.

It gets better - read on!

I went a bit long with my driver on the par 3, 3rd, pitched on and two-putted for a nett par 4. On the 4th I went right into quite heavy rough and the hybrid shot out wasn't brilliant. However, I managed to place the next hybrid shot between the lake on the left and the trees on the right, from where I should have easily pitched on but the 9-iron sliced short. A gap wedge and two putts gave me nett bogey 7.

I went with the 5-wood on the 5th, landing to the right of the green. My chip was short leaving a longish putt, but I needed two to finish with a nett par 4. On the 6th I hit a lovely 180 yard drive then put a hybrid shot on the green. Two putts gave me a nett birdie 4.

The longish 7th went well, a good drive followed by a 5-wood, and then a pitch on with my 9-iron. Two putts for a nett birdie 5. The 8th started well, my third hybrid shot landing to the left of the green behind a low bank. An attempt to chip my gap wedge over the bank failed and a second attempt was well short. I putted from off the green and then putted in for a nett bogey 7.

I played the 9th well. A reasonable drive, followed by a 5-wood and then a hybrid, put me about 20 yards short of the green. A chip-and-run with my 7-iron was short and I needed two putts to finish with a nett par 6.

So for the front nine, 52 shots, 15 points and one blob, with no more than a 7 on any hole. For me, this is perfectly acceptable.

I was just off the right of the green for three on the 10th, following a drive and two hybrid shots. A 7-iron chip-and-run was a bit short and I needed two putts to finish for a nett par 6. I went right on the 11th but recovered with a hybrid shot out of the rough and a 5-wood to within 20 yards of the green. A gap wedge and two putts gave me another nett par 6.

I was on the 12th green for three, a drive, hybrid and 7-iron. Two putts gave me a nett par 5. After a reasonable drive and hybrid on the 13th, I pushed my 9-iron shot into the bunker instead of pitching over it. I got out of the bunker but needed another pitch to get me on the green, followed by two putts for a 7, and a blob. Unfortunate really, as this was my only blob on the back nine.

The 14th was much better. On the green for two after my drive and a hybrid shot. The 14th green is, however, quite tricky, and I needed three putts for a nett par 5. A good drive on the 15th is always helpful given the length of the hole, but although I managed 170 yards the ball ended up in rough to the right of the path. I tried to power it out with a long hybrid but only managed about 70 yards. The next 5-wood was also lacklustre so I really needed a good shot for my fourth, which I got with a 163 yard 5-wood. I was now on five and pitched on, two putts giving me a nett par 7, which wasn't bad considering the chequered approach.

I didn't quite make the green on the short 16th, but chipped up for two and then two-putted for a nett par 4. A 180 yard drive followed by an accurate 156 yard 5-wood put me a couple of inches off the green on the 17th. I putted on and the ball crossed the hole, flipping out and thus robbing me of an exceptional birdie 3, and 4 points! I then missed the relatively short putt back and ended up with a nett par 5.

On the 18th another good drive and 5-wood left me a 40 yard pitch onto the green, but I was just short, needing to putt on. Two more putts gave me a nett bogey 6.

The back nine, therefore, mirrored the front, with 52 shots, 15 points and one blob, and again no more than a 7 for any hole - remarkably consistent for me. Most importantly, however, no 8s, 9s or worse!
