Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 10/08/17

Despite an aching shoulder, some numbness in my left arm and a stiff neck, I decided that I had been sitting indoors too much so ventured out onto the course, promising myself not to 'try too hard' in order to reduce the stress on my various aches and pains. It was a pleasant day with a light wind and plenty of bright spells, so at least I didn't need to battle the elements as well as my infirmities.

I caught the drive clean on the 1st but pushed it left into the trees, a pity as at 185 yards it would have run further along the fairway. I fluffed the shot out although fortunately it still made the fairway but didn't add any distance. I then topped the hybrid, which gained me a paltry 43 yards! The next one was better, after I told myself to keep my eyes on the ball while taking the shot, and after that I put the next just off the right of the green for 5. I putted on and single-putted for 7, a nett bogey. Not bad considering the start.

I was lucky on the 2nd as the drive entered the trees to the left but rolled out to just off the edge of the fairway. My hybrid shot wasn't great but I then pitched on and two-putted for 5, a nett par.
Hole 3 - 10 August 2017
I took my driver on the short 3rd rather than powering an iron and the ball ended up on the green. Two putts for a par, which with two strokes on this hole was a nett eagle for 4 points.

My drive was good on the 4th but the next hybrid shot put the ball on the bank that projects from the right. I completely fluffed a 9-iron trickling it just a few yards, but at least I was now on the flattish ground at the top of the bank. From there a hybrid was short and I pitched on for 5, needing two putts for a nett bogey 7.

I took the driver again on the short 5th, but this time drifted left. I chipped on and two-putted for a nett par 4.

A longish drive on the 6th put me off the left of the fairway, from where my hybrid attempt to the green failed miserably, leaving me still some 70 yards away. I should have played an iron out of the longish grass. But I pitched on from there and two-putted for a nett par 5 - not bad.

I sliced the drive on the 7th and ended up with tress to play over. My 23 degree hybrid did the job, placing me mid-fairway. My next hybrid was just short of the green, from where I putted on and single-putted for a nett birdie 5.

The 8th wasn't so good. The drive just avoided the left side trees but I came down on top of the ball with the next hybrid, gaining me only 60 yards. The next was good, leaving me what should have been a simple pitch to the green, but I shanked the 9-iron into the bunker. I got out but needed another chip onto the green, sinking a longish curving putt for 7, and thus saving a point with a nett bogey 7.

I sliced again on the 9th tee shot, but fortunately it was short so didn't make the lake. My next hybrid wasn't great, and the following one went right, leaving me to play over trees or fade around them. I tried to go over but miss-hit the shot and ended up going around, more by luck than judgement, but the shot was much shorter than intended. My 8-iron was then short and I needed another pitch to get on the green for 6. Unfortunately two putts then left me with a blob, my only one of the round.

Today was actually reasonably successful. Despite the 8 on the last, 51 shots isn't bad for me, and 14 putts was a vast improvement on the 22 I totted up on my last outing. And 16 points meant I nearly played to handicap. Fairway hybrids are still a bit variable and my irons today weren't as good as they've been recently. But considering my aches and pains and the fact that I was trying not to over stress my body, I think the result wasn't too bad.
