Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 12/10/17

After an enforced rest of almost a month, while my back and neck problems calmed down, I ventured out today to see how my aches and pains would bear up on the golf course. It went better than I expected, and more importantly I didn't feel that I had aggravated either of my problems by playing, although that's not to say that they weren't still niggling me a bit.

I forgot to take both my Game Golf device and my Garmin GPS, so no detailed distances today and what I report is what I remember.

I drove well off the 1st tee and although it went left into the edge of the trees I had a good line out. A 7-iron put me back on the fairway but I then pulled a 4-iron shot and we assume that the ball reached the lake. A good 8-iron from the drop position put me just off the right of the green, from where I over-chipped, leaving myself a long putt, which ended up as three! A blobbed 9, but take away the drop and a couple of the putts and it wasn't actually that bad.

I was a bit lucky with the drive on the 2nd. It was veering right towards the ditch but the longer autumn grass stopped the ball. My iron shot out wasn't clean and I needed to pitch on with my wedge, but it rolled much further than I expected, stopping just off the back of the green. A putt on and two putts for a nett bogey 6.

My 5-wood off the 3rd tee suffered from 'head up', going only about 20 yards. A 5-iron then missed the green to the right, from where I made a low 7-iron shot under overhanging branches. The ball crossed the green, settling just off the far side, from where I putted on and single-putted for a nett par 5.

A good drive on the 4th followed by two successive 'straight' 7-irons put me just short of the green for 3. The chip up was again long and I needed two putts to finish with a nett par 6.

The 5-wood worked a bit better on the 5th but veered right onto the bank. My pitching wedge was then heavy and short, needing another chip to get on the green. Two putts for a net bogey 5.

My driver hit the ground hard on the 6th, a rare occurrence for me, but it meant that the ball only made about 15 yards. However, a good 4-iron out of long grass left me about 130 yards out, from where I took my 6-iron and put the ball on the green. Two putts for nett par 5.

I made a bit of a mess of the 7th. The drive was good, and was followed by a good 4-iron putting me centre fairway about 120 yards out. I then came down on top of the ball with my 7-iron, skewing it left. From there I had to play over the bunker. I should have taken a full gap wedge, but instead played a 'half' pitching wedge, which was a mistake as I hit the ground before the ball and pushed the ball into the bunker. I got out in one, but then still had to chip on. Two putts left me with a blobbed 8. Disappointing after a good start to the hole.

The 8th was better. A good drive was followed by a clean 4-iron, and then another iron to just short of the green. A chip up and two putts for a nett par 6.

My drive on the 9th seemed to be going too far left but came round and settled in long grass just before the bunker. A good iron out set me up to the right of the fairway for a shot through the 'gap' towards the green. I was too cautious in trying to avoid the bank and trees to the right, putting my 4-iron shot left into long grass on the far side of the path. I didn't have a direct line to the pin but my iron shot wasn't bad, leaving me a straightforward chip up for 5. Two putts for a nett bogey 7.

After quite a long break and with still a few concerns over injuring myself, I felt that a my total of 57 wasn't too bad. I had 18 putts and scored 11 points. Two bad holes didn't help, but on the plus side most of my drives were solid and I had some very good iron shots. In fact the irons are proving to be very reliable although I have to be careful not to pull the shots to the left, as with the ball that went in the lake on the 1st.

In fact I feel quite positive.
