Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 14/09/17

Another 18 holes today, which may not have been a good idea as I'm suffering quite a lot of sciatica at the moment from an old back injury. It hurts more when I walk than when I am taking shots, but I suspect that it's restricting my movement somewhat. You won't be surprised to hear, therefore, that today wasn't much to write home about. Most of the problems were around the green, where the generally softer ground after heavy rain led to a number of duff chips.

I started with a good drive on the 1st, although it crept off the fairway into light rough. A couple of 5-irons left me with an 8-iron chip, then two putts for a nett par 6: not too bad a start. My drive on the 2nd was also good, followed by a disappointing 8-iron that didn't reach the green. I chipped on for 3 but then three-putted for a nett bogey 6. The 3rd was a bit of a disaster. My 5-wood off the tee was topped and only made just over 50 yards. I then took my pitching wedge and the ball clipped the top of the bunker, but fell back in rather than flipping past. I got out of the bunker but then three-putted again for a nett bogey 6.

The 4th didn't go well either. After a long drive (180 yards) I put a bit of a slice on a 6-iron putting me in rough and leaving me short of where I had hoped to be. I then shanked an 8-iron leaving me under the branches of a small tree. An awkward clearance from there left me needing a chip on, but I caught ground before the ball with my gap wedge and was still off the green. I putted on and then two-putted for a blobbed 8. Fortunately the 5th was better, a somewhat lucky 5-wood off the tee just missed the bunker and ended up pin-high on the green. Two putts for a par and nett birdie.

Hole 5 - 14 September 2017

I went left from the 6th tee, which isn't unusual. Playing off the bank with the ball beneath my feet I was high with the 5-iron and only made 100 yards along the ground. My gap wedge was then a little short but I putted on and single-putted for a nett par 5. I sliced badly off the tee on the 7th, needing to play over trees back to the fairway. After a 5-iron my pitching wedge shot was short, needing a gap wedge follow up to get me on the green. Two putts for a nett bogey 7.

The approach to Hole 7

The 8th was a little better. An average drive, two 5-irons and an 8-iron put me on the green, with two putts for a nett par 6. But the 9th didn't go that well. After a drive and two 5-irons I found myself over to the right, with trees to the front, not an unusual situation on this hole. An attempt to clear the trees using the pitching wedge didn't make it, the ball going through the branches and landing short. I struck ground before the ball with the next pitching wedge shot, leaving me with another chip onto the green. Two putts for a blobbed 8.

So it was 55 out with 19 putts, for 12 points. Nothing to shout about.

My drive off the 10th was low and to the left, but it came round and left me with a reasonable lie in light rough. After two average 5-irons I chipped on and two-putted for a nett par 6. I made a mess of the 11th. After a reasonable drive my 5-iron shot was heavy and only made 50 yards. The next one was better, leaving me what should have been a simple pitch to the green, but my pitching wedge dug in and the ball went nowhere. My next attempt was also just short, needing a putt on and two more putts for a blobbed 8.

After my drive and a 5-iron on the 12th I had a simple chip up, but was long. This resulted in a three-putt for a nett bogey 6. On the 13th a good drive was followed by a good 5-iron, leaving me a chip up and two putts for a nett par 6. My drive was off the right of the fairway on the 14th, with trees in front obstructing a clear shot to the green. I therefore went left, leaving me with a pitch to the green of about 50 yards, but I thinned the pitching wedge the ball ending up at the far end of the long green. A long putt back was good for length and I putted in for a nett par 5.

For the second time in a week my drive on the 15th was straight down the middle. Unfortunately the next two 5-irons were both heavy and didn't progress me that far on this long hole. The next was better, leaving me an 8-iron chip and two putts for a nett par 7. I took the 5-wood off the tee on the 16th but again didn't hit it cleanly, being well short of the green. My gap wedge was again short, needing a chip on, but then I three-putted for a nett bogey 6.

The 17th didn't go too badly, with an average drive and a 5-iron leaving me a pitching wedge to the green, then two putts for a nett par. My drive on the 18th clipped a small shrub that was more difficult to hit than to miss! Fortunately it deflected right onto the fairway. My next 5-iron wasn't that long and the following 8-iron was short. I chipped up with the 8-iron but was well short of the hole, needing two putts to finish with a nett bogey 6.

Although the back nine felt better, it was again 55 shots but this time with 20 putts and 13 points. As such today was pretty much average, with two blobs on the front and one on the back. Breaking 50 on either the front or back is proving very difficult, largely because of poor shots around the green. I sometimes think that I will never manage 18 holes without messing up at least one of them.
