Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 18/08/16

Back to my home course and still feeling a bit under the weather after a virus laid me low with coughing and a temperature. It was a warm muggy day which didn't help as my temperature control mechanism appears to be all out of sorts. Despite my feeling a bit off colour I didn't play badly, two wayward tee shots spoiling what otherwise would have been a memorable 9 holes.

With the driver back in the bag on the 1st I drifted a little right but avoided the ditch and got past the end of the tree line. A nice 182 yard 5-wood then set me up to put a hybrid shot pin-high, just off the right of the green. I putted on and single putted for a par 5, a nett birdie.

As is now my practice I took my 23 degree hybrid off the tee on the 2nd, there being a ditch and out-of-bounds to the right that will trap any slice. The hybrid is more controllable and I hit it 150 yards, which was more than acceptable. The same club should then have reached the green but I was heavy on the shot and needed to chip on with my 9-iron, which strayed right, needing another gentle 7-iron chip-and-run and a single putt to finish for a nett par 5.

I put my hybrid tee shot on the green on the par 3, 3rd, but then annoyingly three-putted for a nett par 4.

I managed to negotiate the dangerous 4th without incident today. A good tee shot followed by a hybrid that strayed right but which still left me a shot to the green. However, the 8-iron shot went left and I chipped on with my gap wedge, two putts giving me a nett par 6.

My first real mistake was on the 5th. I put a 5-wood tee shot left (for a change) and although I saw the ball bounce among trees we couldn't find it. I dropped where I saw the bounce, chipped on with the 9-iron and two-putted for a nett bogey 5.

The 6th was a bit bizarre. I caught the ground with the driver and the shot went wildly left, rolling over a hill off the left of the fairway. I found a ball where I expected mine to be, but although it was a Srixon, like mine, it wasn't mine. I then spotted another ball about ten yards away, another Srixon, but again not mine. We never found my ball, which was weird. I took a penalty drop and played over the tree capped hill, landing on the path on the opposite side of the fairway. I free-dropped off the path and played a memorable 8-iron over tall trees to drop on the green for 4, and two-putt for a nett bogey 6.

The 7th was far less eventful. A good drive was followed by a poor 5-wood that went left into the rough. I played a 7-iron that needed to clear a bunker to reach the green, but it didn't, leaving me in the bunker. I got out and on to the green and two-putted for a nett par 6.

A 180 yard drive on the 8th followed by a 160 yard 5-wood set me up for an 8-iron pitch onto the green, where two putts gave me a nett birdie 5. Much better.

So barring the problems on the 5th and 6th things had gone quite well and all I needed to do was keep things together on the par 5, 9th. I took a hybrid off the tee to keep the lake out of play. With my next 5-wood I came down on the ball sending it left along the ground for only just over 60 yards. The following 5-wood was far better but because I needed to miss trees on the left, it took me too far right, from where I needed to play over quite high trees to reach the green. I achieved this using my 23 degree hybrid putting me about five yards off the right hand side of the green. A gap wedge chip and two putts for a nett bogey 7 finished the round.

A round of 49 with 16 putts was more than acceptable, and if I hadn't had the two penalty drops a 47 would have been better than handicap. I need to work on my tee shots to try to avoid getting into trouble, or losing balls, as the rest of my game is at the moment not too bad.
