Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 18/05/17

After an encouraging round last Thursday, today I had hoped to keep the good stuff going, plus with a Mad Cats' competition tomorrow I needed to get a bit of practice having not played for a week. I'm sorry to say that the good stuff had again taken a rest, and far from reassuring me for tomorrow, I finished wondering what sort of disaster it may turn out to be.

Off the 1st I went just into the left side trees, which wouldn't have been so bad if the ball hadn't been under low branches and close to a tree trunk. I managed just 20 yards with the clearance but was back on the short stuff. A couple of hybrid shots got me to within pitching distance but I then conspired to mess up two consecutive 8-iron shots. The heavy rain the day before had softened the ground considerably and I dug in with both shots. Another 8-iron finally got me on the green for 7, and with two putts it was a heavily blobbed 9.

The 2nd restored my confidence a bit. A good tee shot landed in a shallow divot hole. I took my 5-iron rather than the hybrid but still didn't connect cleanly, gaining only about 100 yards. However, I pitched on with the pitching wedge and single-putted for a par 4, a nett birdie.

On the 3rd I went right under the trees where a seasonal water hazard often forms. Fortunately there wasn't any water but my shot needed to keep low under willow branches. I took the 7-iron and managed the low shot, but it was long and off the far side of the green. A gentle pitch and two putts for a nett par 5.

The 4th wasn't great. The tee shot wasn't long and went right. I then had a bad hybrid shot that hugged the ground, ending up in the fairway bunker. The 9-iron out wasn't bad at 100 yards and the next hybrid put me just off the green. I putted on and two-putted for a nett bogey 7.

I put the ball right on the 5th but had a good pitching wedge recovery onto the green, with a par possibility. Unfortunately it took two putts for a nett par 4.

The 6th is a fairly easy hole but not today. I had a good tee shot followed by a poor hybrid that left me almost in the fairway bunker. I took an 8-iron but was both long and left, the ball ending up under a laurel bush. I had to drop, but then messed up the pitch, leaving me still off the green. I putted on and two-putted for a blobbed 8.

The 7th went a bit better. A long tee shot followed by an equally long second left me with a pitch to the green. It was good for length but off the green to the left. A short pitch and two putts for a nett par 6.

The 8th was today's disaster. After a poor tee shot I miss-hit the next, which only went 55 yards. Trying to recover some distance with a hybrid I sliced the next and sent the ball arcing right into the lake. A drop was followed by yet another badly hit hybrid, and I needed another shot to get me just off the green. I then thinned the pitching wedge and sent the ball across the green, from where I needed another pitch to get on. Add two putts and it was a horrendously blobbed 10!

After the 8th I wasn't too hopeful for the 9th, but as things turned out it went reasonably well. The tee shot wasn't that long but the second was good at 165 yards. The third got me within pitching distance and I actually managed to put the ball on the green. Two putts for a nett par 6 and a half-decent finish.

So, after my 49 last Thursday, today was a 59 with 16 putts and 12 points. A 9 on the 1st and a 10 on the 8th were the obvious culprits. Ending well on the 9th at least bolstered my confidence a bit for the competition the following day.
