Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 18/10/18

The fine weather continues into late October but the areas of longer grass are now heavy and damp, proving much more of a challenge should you need to chip out, especially when close to the greens. I was quite happy up until Hole 8, managing to control my game and not do anything too silly. But a pulled drive on the 8th gave me my first blob, and then I really messed up the 9th.

Autumn colours on Hole 6

We teed off earlier than I had expected, giving me no time to warm up. I didn't hit my drive off the 1st that well and was lucky it stayed out of the ditch on the right. However, after that I managed a couple of reasonable hybrids and put the ball on the green for 4. Unfortunately three putts left me with a nett bogey 7. The drive on the 2nd was better and although my hybrid didn't make the green, as a result of sending the shot through the outer branches of a tree, I pitched on for three, with two putts for a nett par 5.

There were no less than three groups waiting on the 3rd tee, including us. Another slow day! When we finally teed off, my hybrid tee shot curved right into long grass to the right of the green. I pitched on and two-putted for a nett birdie 4. A longer drive on the 4th was followed by a ground-hugging 7-iron, but it was safe. The next 7-iron repeated the trick, leaving me short of the green, from where I managed to miss the green with my next shot. I chipped on and two-putted for a nett bogey 7.

I took my driver on the short 5th and managed to find the far left of the large green. Unfortunately the pin was far right. This is an undulating green and I wasn't surprised when my long putt didn't do quite what I expected. The next putt overshot, and I finally got down with the third for a nett par 4. The 6th was my longest drive of the day at 175 yards. My 7-iron was then good for distance but off the left of the green. A chip on and two putts for a nett par 5. I had another good drive on the 7th, followed by a hybrid and an 8-iron that left me just short of the green. A chip-and-run and two putts gave me a nett par 6.

After three nett pars in a row I pulled my drive on the 8th putting the ball into the trees on the left. I had to take a safe sideways shot out. My hybrid wasn't that long, and the next one still left me about 80 yards from the green. Once again I was short with my pitch, and a delicate gap wedge chip to the green followed by two putts couldn't rescue the blob, the final count being 8.

I didn't manage to redeem myself on the 9th. The drive wasn't long but was dead centre but I then came down on top of the ball with my hybrid, skewing it left into the fairway bunker. A pitching wedge got me out and added some 50 yards, followed by a 6-iron over the edge of trees to set me up for a clear shot to the green. But I pulled the hybrid and the ball went left into trees, hitting one solidly and bouncing back. A low 6-iron from a poor lie made the green, but left me a very long putt. I was short and ended up taking three putts for a 9. Far from the best way to end a round.

I was a bit disappointed as up until the 8th I felt that I had been reasonably in control. My fairway driving accuracy was 86% but in the end I came in with 55. I three-putted on three holes, which didn't help, my putting total being 21. I once again scored 13 points! On the positive side, the irons were better behaved today.
