Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 26/10/17

Things didn't go too badly today although an over-adventurous shot on the 4th resulted in a lost ball, and because we didn't want to delay play I picked up, effectively removing the hole from play. Conditions were still remarkably good and although it wasn't as bright as recently, it wasn't cold and the wind was very light.

A chancy drive on the 1st came close to reaching the right side ditch but just survived. A lacklustre 4‑iron was followed by a better one, and then a pitching wedge to the green. Two putts for a nett par 6. Not a bad start.

The drive on the 2nd was also chancy, but this time I went into the ditch on the right. I dropped but then looked up while taking an 8-iron, topping the ball and sending it a few yards. The next attempt with the same club was better but still short of the green. I pitched on and two-putted but with the penalty drop finished with a blobbed 7.

I tried the 4-iron off the tee on the short 3rd but didn't connect cleanly, pushing the ball right and ending up short. My pitch then clipped the overhanging willow branches and just dropped dead. I then muffed an 8-iron chip leaving me a putt from off the green, and another putt to finish with a nett par 5.

The 4th didn't go well. A slightly sliced drive was followed by two poor 7-irons, leaving me about 150 yards from the green, with a lake to the left and trees and out-of-bounds to the right. After such a poor start I went for broke with my 4-iron, and although the shot was clean it was just a bit too far to the left. We didn't find the ball and I decided not to play out the hole as there were players waiting behind.

On the 5th another attempt off the tee with the 4-iron again didn't go too well. It was well short and ended up on the right bank. Fortunately a good pitching wedge shot put me on the green, but three putts left me with a nett bogey 5.

The drive on the 6th was long but went left onto a bank. My 7-iron off the bank was clean but too far left, the ball fortunately landing besides a bunker rather than in it. I chipped on with the gap wedge and two-putted for a nett par 5.

I sliced the drive on the 7th ending up with trees to the front, or the alternative of trying to hit through a fairly tight gap in the tree line. I went for it, only to hit the ball low (head up again!), fortunately making it through the gap, just, but with branches impeding my backswing. I punched out a 5-iron onto the fairway, still well short of the green. My pitching wedge shot was then high but short, needing an 8-iron chip on and two putts for a nett bogey 7.

The 8th was what all holes should be. My drive was 165 yards, followed by a 4-iron of 140 yards and then a 7-iron to the green of 127 yards. To be on the green in three on this long par 4 (441 yards) is a rare event. Two putts gave me a nett birdie 5.

Hole 8 - 26 October 2017

The 9th started with a pulled drive that left me way to the left, although it was 163 yards. An 8-iron back onto the fairway was nicely placed but then I had two not-so-good 4-irons. Now on 4, I pitched to the green with my pitching wedge (always satisfying when playing to the 9th or 18th in front of the pavilion). Two putts for a nett bogey 7.

So it was 47 over 8 holes and 16 putts, which translates into something around my normal score of between 55 and 58 for 9 holes. My drives nearly all veered right today, which was worrying as this was something I thought I had almost eliminated. I continue to be pleased with my iron shots even though some were heavy and short. So, not too dispirited but still a long way from being satisfied.
