Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 28/08/18

I went out with the women again yesterday having missed my Monday golf because of a family event. This gave me the opportunity to hand in another card and thus fulfil my obligation to submit three cards to maintain a handicap rating. The previous two cards weren't great. Today was a bit better if one ignores the complete and utter disaster on the 15th. Another interesting outcome was that I had a 6 on each of the outgoing 9 holes, bar the par 3, 3rd, where I had a 4. The back 9 wasn't so good.

A straight drive off the 1st tee followed by two similarly straight hybrids allowed me to put an 8-iron shot on the green. I was a couple of inches short of a par, but the knock-in gave me a nett par 6. On the 2nd my drive arced right and the ball bounced into the ditch, which fortunately is still dry. A drop and a couple of iron shots got me to the green, where two putts gave me a nett bogey 6. Yet again my attempt to lay up on the 3rd didn't quite work out with a very short tee shot. I managed to pitch over the bunker but the ball ran off the back of the green. A chip on and one putt for a nett birdie 4.

I had a longish drive on the 4th and then placed the next hybrid shot perfectly for a pitch to the green. I then ruined things with three putts for a nett par 6. Once again I messed up the tee shot on the par 3, 5th, this time following it with a 'dig-in' iron that didn't make 20 yards. The next 8-iron shot was better, but ran off the back of the green. A putt on was followed by two more putts for a blobbed 6. My drive on the 6th found the right-side rough. A 6-iron out wasn't great but I put the next 8-iron shot on the green. Once again a three-putt spoilt things leaving me with a nett bogey 6.

On the 7th a problem free approach got me to the green for 4, where I two-putted for a nett par 6. The 8th went much the same as the 7th, with a nett par 6. After a short drive on the 9th my next two hybrids were both well positioned leaving me an 8-iron shot to the green. To be on in 4 on this par 5 is quite an achievement for me but I couldn't make the putt for a par, the second putt giving me a nett par 6.

On the 10th, the 6-shots-per-hole trend continued with the same driver-hybrid-hybrid-8-iron approach, and two putts. The 11th, however, broke this run. A thinned pitching wedge took me off the back of the green and I needed a putt on and two more putts to get down for a nett bogey 7. My drive on the 12th found the bunker that's trapped me on the previous two occasions. I managed to hit a good 8-iron out for 85 yards. My next iron went left from where I chipped on and two-putted for a nett bogey 6.

I was almost on the green for three on the 13th but my chip on was long, needing two putts for a nett par 6. Yes, another 6. I topped my drive on the 14th, the ball only making 45 yards. I tried to recover some ground with my 3-wood, which worked quite well, but my 6-iron was then short of the green. A chip on was also short on this long sloping green. And then I grounded the putter on the first putt! The outcome was three putts for a blobbed 7.

The 15th was a disaster. I misdirected the drive into a conifer only about 50 yards from the tee. I had to take a drop out, but then messed up the next hybrid shot, gaining only another 50 yards. This is a long par 5 and two short shots at the beginning is not good. The guys in front then waved us through, as one was looking for a ball, adding to the pressure. My next two hybrids were mediocre, and as I was now on 5, I chanced the 3-wood, which rewarded me with the opportunity to put the next shot on the green for 7. Two putts would have kept me in single digits, but I needed three for a blobbed 10.

The short 16th was far less eventful. I was on the green for two but once more took three putts to get down for a nett par 5. On the 17th a drive followed by a 3-wood stopped the ball just short of the lateral bunker that protects most of this green. A gap wedge over and two putts for a nett par 5. The 3-wood didn't work quite as well on the 18th and it took me four to get to the green, where two putts gave me a nett bogey 6.

A 52 on the front 9 wasn't that bad, but 58 on the return was obviously influenced by the 15th debacle although I also had five three-putt holes, which never helps. I totalled 26 point, 10 below my handicap expectation, so I guess I'll soon be playing off 28 rather than 27. It's also fascinating that I took a 6 on 12 out of the 18 holes.
