Wyboston Lakes - 26/08/16

Our August Mad Cats outing was at Wyboston Lakes, a new course for me. As the name suggests, there's plenty of water around. Brilliant sunshine all day with a fresh light breeze which was very welcome.

The 1st plays around a large lake, so you need a drive of 180 yards plus to get to the corner. I made it, just, with my 5-wood, having left my wayward driver at home. A couple of hybrids then got me close to the green, an 8-iron chip and two putts giving me a nett birdie 6 on this par 5. A good start.

I had driven off on a low (red) tee on the 1st with the 5-wood, and it worked well, but on the 2nd I was thin and bizarrely the ball hit one of the ladies' tee point markers, ricocheted off, and ended up in the middle of the 1st fairway. Playing back through the trees wasn't easy and it took me two shots to get back on to the 2nd, and even then I wasn't on the fairway. A hybrid and 7-iron took me to the back of the green, and a putt on and two more putts added up to a nett triple bogie 8. So much for the good start.

Wyboston Lakes holes 1 nad 2 - 26 August 2016

The par 3, 3rd was a better, my hybrid tee shot landing just off the green on the right, from where I putted on and then two putted for a nett par 4.

The 4th also went well. A reasonable 5-wood off the tee and over the lake (I was now using a higher 'blue' tee) followed by a hybrid over the trees on the corner of the dogleg, gave me an 8-iron pitch and two putts for a nett birdie 5.

The sad tale at the par 3, 5th was that I put my hybrid tee shot on the green and then four putted, one miss being not much more than a tap in. Very, very depressing.

The 6th is tricky as the green is protected by two bunkers in front of a small pond. My 5-wood tee shot left me a doable hybrid shot over the pond, but I was a bit heavy with the shot on the very hard ground and the ball went in the pond. A penalty drop and a 9-iron pitch got me on the green for 4, with two putts for a nett bogey 6.

The 7th is another par 3, and again I reached the green from the tee, and this time three putted for a nett par 4.

There's a ditch about 150 yards out on the 8th, so I played to lay up but was well short. My next hybrid shot wasn't well hit and only just cleared the ditch. From there I hit a strong 5-wood that unfortunately went left getting close to the 4th fairway. My 9-iron chip was rubbish, as was the following gap wedge, another gap wedge shot being necessary to get me on the green. I was now on 6 but had two shots on handicap, so a 7 would have got me a point. As it was I needed two putts so got an 8 for a nett double bogey.

The 9th was another mini disaster. I miss-hit the tee shot sending it left, where it ended up on an unused teeing ground. From there I played a 5-wood and then a hybrid, but it went right into trees. I got out with my 7-iron to the edge of the green, from where I putted on. I then needed three putts to get down for a triple bogey 8.

And so to the back nine.

The 10th was another sadness. A 204 yard 5-wood drive, followed by a 172 yard 5-wood second, got me about 30 yards from the green on this par 4. I then put my 9-iron pitch off the green to the right, behind a bank. I needed two attempts at my gap wedge to get on the green (ridiculous!) and two putts to finish with a nett bogey 7. It should have been at least a nett birdie 5.

The 11th redeemed things somewhat. A couple of 5-woods and a hybrid took me to just in front of the green, from where a putt on and one more putt gave me a nett birdie 5.

The 12th wasn't too bad. I took a hybrid off the tee as it was a positioning shot to open up the fairway. A 5-wood and a 9-iron put me just off the right of the green, with a putt on and two more putts for a nett par 6.

The 13th was my only true par. A hybrid tee shot and a 9-iron got me on the green of this par 3, and a single putt for a nett birdie 3.

I played the 14th well, it being the index 1 hole on this course. I opened up the left hand dogleg with a 166 yard 5-wood off the tee. Another 5-wood just cleared the ditch across the fairway and an 8-iron left me just short of the green. A gap wedge chip and one putt for 5 gave me a nett birdie.

The 15th is a long par 5. Three 5-woods, each around 150-160 yards, got me to within 20 yards of the green. An 8-iron chip got me on but needing three putts to finish left me with a nett bogey 7.

I miss-hit the 5-wood tee shot on the 16th, the ball rolling into a water-filled ditch. A drop and a thinned hybrid amazingly got me to the green for 3. Another annoying three putt finish gave me a nett double bogey 6 on this par 3.

Three 5-woods progressed me about 420 yards on the long par 5, 17th, but the third one went right behind trees. A couple of low-hit 7-irons got me to the green but I again needed three putts to finish for a nett triple bogey 8.

My 5-wood tee shot on the 18th went right but was in a playable lie. The next 5-wood again went right but this time there was a possibility that it had gone out of bounds. In fact it hadn't, I found it behind a clump of small conifers. I used my 20 degree hybrid to hit a ground-hugging shot under the conifers' low branches but couldn't find the ball on the other side. It must have actually hit one of the conifer trunks as I eventually found it further towards the hole than I expected. A 7-iron chip on and two putts for a nett bogey 6, which in the circumstances wasn't bad.

The final tally was 107 strokes for 26 points. I scored 3 points on five of the holes and blobbed five. There lies my problem - lack of consistency.

My putting was awful and I must have lost at least four shots because of bad chipping. The extremely hard ground didn't help, making it difficult to get behind the ball with both irons and fairway woods. I was experimenting by using my 5-wood instead of my driver and was more than happy with the distance I achieved on many of the shots, and the fact that I was on the fairway more of the time. However, there were a few failures, although increasing the tee height proved a good move.

As always it has added to the experience bank but that doesn't take away the feeling of what might have been!
