Photography | Lyon

Lyon in 2018 was a revelation. Not as big as Paris but just as interesting, and while we were there far less crowded. We travelled when there was industrial action affecting SNCF, which caused us to alter our return date, but in the event everything went smoothly.

The town has much to offer. We stayed in the Presqu'île neighbourhood, which translates as peninsula, sitting as it does between the Saône and Rhône rivers. Vieux Lyon was a shortish walk across the Saône but getting to other places invariably involved going uphill, and lots of steps, the town extending up the steep inclines of the valley.

To the west there is the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière and the Théâtre Gallo-Romain, both involving quite a climb. Equally demanding was our walk to the Croix-Rousse quarter where we visited the La Maison des Canuts where there are displays of the silk making history of the town.

We descended from Croix-Rousse by way of the Traboules, unique subterranean passages that allowed the silk makers and other artisans to move between streets under cover. Not all the Traboules are open to the public but there are 'tourist' trails that, fortunately for us, weren't busy when we were there.

Although it can't compete with Paris in terms of the number of museums, the Musée de beaux arts is offers a fine collection.

We also took a short trip to the Musée Lumière, where one can see a remnant of the building that featured in the first moving picture and a collection Lumière products.
